ABOUT

Sal (Salvatoré) was born in New York City and received his formal education in fine arts from the Pratt Institute. He was active in the New York art community in the 1960s and 70s, during a period of time when a new counterculture renaissance was taking place. This was a time of social unrest and exciting cultural awakenings, led by the artistic masters of the time, Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning and Salvador Dali, which to this day help inspire Sal’s artistic creations.

Sal’s artistic repertoire includes painting, graphic arts, sculpture, design, and photography. At times in collaboration with other artists, he also wrote poetry, essays, and is a colorful chronicler of the human experience. As a painter of modern life, the major themes in his work include the subconscious, sexuality, religion, science, and his closest personal relationships. He is known for his technical skill and eccentric images in his work which continue to push the outer edges of artistic expression. His art has been widely exhibited and is now inspired by the coastal community of San Diego where he lives and works. His California studio is home to the permanent collection of many of his creations.
